First or High Second class Post Graduation Degree (with marks of 55% and above) in Sociology, Social/ Cultural Anthropology, Economics, Social Work, Rural Development, Population & Development Studies, Forest Management, Agriculture, Management, Rural Development, Social Sciences, Economics, Banking, Political Science, Public Administration, Local Governance, M.Tech (in any field of Science & Technology including Geo Informatics, Space Technology, Spatial Information Technology), Library Science, Journalism, Mass Media and Statistics.

Its mission is to develop a committed cadre of rural development professionals trained to deal with the challenges in rural areas.It is an autonomous organization under Department of Rural Development, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. The institute was first named National Institute of Community Development (NICD) upon its foundation in 1964, with merger two as Central Institute of Study and Research in Community Development at Mussoorie, (now in Uttarakhand) and Trainers Training Institute at Rajput.
