About National School of Drama

National School of Drama (NSD) is a theater training institute located in New Delhi, India. It is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture of the Government of India. It was established in 1959 by the Sangeet Natak Academy, and in 1975 an independent school was formed. In 2005 it was deemed to be university status, but in 2011 it was canceled at the request of the institute.
The school can be formed in 1954 at a seminar, where the idea of the central institution for the theater was churned, after which a draft plan was prepared in 1955, and Sangeet Natak Akademi, in which Jawaharlal Nehru was president, he started preparing plans for the institute. Meanwhile, elsewhere in Delhi, the Indian Theater Association Bharatiya Natya Sangh (BNS) established the ‘Asian Theater Institute’ (ATI) independently on January 20, 1958, with the help of UNESCO, and in July 1958, the Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) was taken over), India’s National Academy of Music, Dance and the drama of the Government of India.
